Sqoot helps publishers & developers make money & keep users happy.

While Sqoot publishers & developers see amazing user engagement, making money is still the most popular benefit. Duh! Given we strive to deliver unparalleled value to customers, we're now allowing publishers & developers to keep 100% of commissions earned (previously it was 50%).

It just got even easier to make money. After all, why should Groupon have all the fun? Better yet, we apply the 100% payout retroactively. Once your balance reaches $100, we'll email you with payout instructions.

In case your wondering, the 100% payout applies to the new API too. If you're itching for early access email us.

Much love.

Screen_shot_2012-05-15_at_5

Back around Christmas of 2010, we introduced a widget that made adding deals to your website as simple as a few lines of JavaScript and HTML. We wanted to make it easy for site owners to add daily deals without needing to write any code.

Sady, on June 1st we're sunsetting the widget. Why?

  • Deals are not a drop in replacement for AdSense. Many customers that installed the widget (or the WordPress plugin we built on top of it) expected CPMs to compare with traditional display advertising. But ads payout on every click. Deals don't (even though they generated much higher CTRs).
  • Our API is amazing and we're actively improving it. It requires a bit more upfront effort to get integrated, but the results are much better (monetarily and experientially).
  • As a small scrappy team we can't afford to maintain everything. Instead we focus on doing just a few things really well.

If you're currently using the widget, you'll want to figure out another solution ASAP. We may eventually come out with a JS SDK but don't hold your breath. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to reach out to us.

Fri, 27 Apr 2012 14:53:10 -0700 Sneak Peak at Our New API http://blog.sqoot.com/sneak-peak-at-our-new-api http://blog.sqoot.com/sneak-peak-at-our-new-api

We've been busy. Over the last month, we moved into 500 Startupshired employee #1, and demo'd at Daily Deal Summit East. We've also been cranking on a new API for you. It's in private beta but we want to give you a taste of what's coming (hope you're hungry):

  • Loco for Local: Almost all deals are local so we're treating them that way. One deal = one location. It's simple and intuitive and will make for faster queries and more deals per response.
  • Duplicate Deal Detection: Deal providers often have duplicates in their feeds. Even worse, the same deal can appear in different feeds. It's a hot mess that you should never have to worry about. Soon, you won't have to.
  • Brand New Backend: We started from scratch with an emphasis on reliability and visibility.
  • More Providers: We're quickly adding paid & unpaid advertisers (Amazon Local, Google Offers, TravelZoo, and more).
  • New Attributes: Deals will have new fields you've been waiting for (e.g., number of deals sold, market, untracked URLs, fine print, voucher expiration date).
  • Cleaner Attributes: Unusably long titles and descriptions cluttered with terrible HTML are just a couple examples of things we're taking care of so you don't have to.
  • URL Verification: When URLs break, your customers suffer. Now, we verify each deal's URL to make sure it resolves before exposing it in our API. No big deal.
  • New Affiliate Tracking: One of the biggest reasons to use Sqoot is that we handle all the affiliate tracking for you. Simply put, we're revamping how we handle affiliate links to be more reliable and more flexible.
  • Merchant Data: We're adding star ratings, hours of operation, comments, and social helpers to make your life easier.
  • ID Matching: Use Foursqure, Yelp, Factual, CitySearch or another local data provider? Now you can find Sqoot deals with the IDs you already use.
  • Accurate Categorization: To date, the categories for our deals have been good, not great. That's all about to change.
  • New Endpoints: Everything is namespaced and RESTful. Nothing will break with our current API.
  • JSONP: You asked for it.
  • SDKs: We've got a Ruby gem in the pipeline. iOS and JS SDKs to follow.
  • SSL: Say goodbye to that pesky non-SSL warning message.

Over the next few weeks, we'll be talking more about each of these improvements and how they're going to make your integration with Sqoot easier and more awesome. Stay tuned.

For early access, please email us.

At Sqoot, we believe that great products are built by great people. Today, we're beyond happy to announce that Brandon Weiss has joined our team.

Hey everyone! I'm really excited to be on board. Avand and I go a little ways back, and I've worked behind the scenes on Sqoot for a few months now. I'm stoked to join the fold and participate in 500 Startups with such great people.

A little about me: I'm originally from Chicago, but moved to San Francisco to build better products, enjoy the awesome weather, be near the ocean, and learn to surf. I work on products and businesses holistically, but programming is my primary medium. I also write occasionally and tweet.

We're going to build some amazing stuff in the coming months; I can't wait to show everyone. If anybody happens to be in SF, I'd love to meet for food/drinks/surfing. Don't hesitate to hit me up!

500
We're ecstatic to announce Sqoot's acceptance into 500 Startups' Spring Accelerator. A big thank you to our customers, investors, mentors, advisors, friends, family, and foe. We couldn't have done it without you.

What does this mean for you? In a word: awesomeness.

We rebuilt our API with a laser-focus on quality. Expect more deals, improved monetization, and even easier integration. We'll also launch an incredible data tool that connects motivated, local merchants with service providers. We can't wait to show it to you.

We spent 2011 on a quest to better connect consumers with merchants. And it's working. Yesterday we served our 11th million deal across web, email and mobile. We've been around, too, having conquered Philadelphia, Chicago, Boston, New York, and now beautiful Mountain View, CA

By the way, Google bought our largest competitor for $100 mm (not too shabby) and shut down their API (typical). Location-based technologies have never been hotter. To say there's a huge opportunity now, is an understatement.

Awesome things to come. We're beyond excited & hope you are too.

Much love,
Mo & Avand

Tue, 20 Mar 2012 21:05:00 -0700 We Can Do Better: An Apology from Sqoot http://blog.sqoot.com/we-can-do-better-an-apology-from-sqoot http://blog.sqoot.com/we-can-do-better-an-apology-from-sqoot

Recently, we decided to host a hack-a-thon in Boston. Our goal: to bring developers together with the community and new technologies to build amazing things. Like any good party, we wanted great music, great people, and great food. We wanted to do better than pizza and soft drinks, and truly wanted everyone involved to benefit in a big way. We didn’t want developers to leave in the same cliques they came with because of a lack of cross-pollination nor did we want sponsors to spend thousands of dollars yet still miss connecting with ideal users. We really wanted to do better.

Unfortunately, we did worse. When we put together the original event page, we used language that we now realize was reckless and hurt efforts to diversify gender in tech. We immediately and deservedly received an enormous backlash. While we aimed to call attention to the male-dominated tech world through humor and intended to be inclusive, the gravity of our wording was just the opposite. Our words completely undermined our intentions and went further to harm the world we're trying to have a positive impact on.

We apologize unequivocally to our sponsors, customers, friends and family, and community. We'd like to thank everyone for being so outspoken. As a young startup, we learned a lot today and are better people and a better company for it.

As we decide whether to continue with the event, or reschedule for another time, we will focus efforts on making sure that our event marketing is inclusive to all. We will do better.

If you have any questions, or want to chat, don't hesitate to reach out.

Sincerely,

Mo, Avand, & Sqoot

Yesterday, we reported that tonight we'd need to bring Sqoot down for maintenance. Good news! We've figured out a way to do the maintenance we need without downtime. Instead, for a few hours today the Click and Commission APIs will return limited (or no) data, while we copy data from one database to another. Once the copy is complete, all data will be returned normally. All this should be complete by later tonight.

All other services are unaffected.

UPDATE (Mar 2nd, 2:30PM): All click data has been migrated over. All web services (clicks, APIs, images, etc.) should be operating at 100%.

Top Five Cities Down to Brown - Sqoot Daily Deal API

Ever notice your co-worker that shows up Wednesday morning with a golden brown tan when you’re sure she didn't make it down to the Bahamas for a Tuesday night quickie? What about your neighbor who's always roasted to perfection in the dead of the winter despite never taking off that jacket?

Thanks to the marvels of modern technology, there’s more than one way to get brown. The Indoor Tanning Association says indoor tanning in the US employs 140,000+ people, and others estimate that salon tanning services are a $5 billion industry. Whether it comes from a lamp or a can, while laying down or standing up, a host of daily deals turn your local fake n' bakery even more irresistible.

Where are you most likely to find people who include roasting indoors in their beauty routines? We looked at daily deal purchases in America’s largest cities to see which city purchased the most tanning deals in 2011. Using proprietary data (public data & our own), we analyzed the total number of tanning deals purchased in 2011, scaled by city population. Check out the graphic (above).

The data shows that the Lone Star state is home to a LOT of indoor cooking. The winner was Houston, TX, where 17.7 of every 10,000 people purchased a tanning deal last year. They inched out Dallas, which sold 16.4 deals per 10,000 people. Chicago & Atlanta are runners up, and Washington, DC is a notable mention. Congrats to all cities for participating (as if they had a choice).

Looking to improve monetization, enhance local relevance or engage your pale users with relevant, aggregated deals? Check out Sqoot’s daily deal API.

We despise downtime but unfortunately sometimes there's just no way around it.

On Monday, Dec 12th between 4-6PM Sqoot will be undergoing maintenance.

During this window, the site and API will be down. It also means that if people click on a Sqoot deal, they won't be redirected to the deal site.

We will do our best to minimize downtime. Stay tuned to @sqoot on Twitter for up to the millisecond status updates.

If you don't know about our search shortcuts, you should. They make it easy to do common searches. Today, we're adding mobile to the line up:

  • NEW mobileOnly deals for providers that have mobile-friendly checkout.
  • metadata: Only deals for providers that support click-to-purchase tracking via our metadata
  • timely-stats: Only deals for providers that report stats quickly (usually within one hour)
  • daily-deals: Limits results to just the deal providers that give us true daily deals (huge discount, short expiration).
  • women: Just deal categories that women love.
  • men: Exclude deals that are specifically female-centric.

Just another thing to make your life a little easier. All in a days work!

Sun, 04 Dec 2011 19:44:00 -0800 Taste Our Secret Sauce: Deal Scores http://blog.sqoot.com/taste-our-secret-sauce-deal-scores http://blog.sqoot.com/taste-our-secret-sauce-deal-scores

20090109fries2
McDonalds has their "special sauce," In-n-Out does it "animal style." In Utah, Hires Big H calls it "fry sauce." That's their way of making food irresistable. At Sqoot, our secret sauce is our "deal score," our algorithm for ranking the best deals. Today we're sharing it with you by including it in our deal API.

Our deal score is a combination of:

  • Commission: We favor deals that offer big payouts.
  • Price: Not too cheap, not too expensive.
  • Expiration: The sooner the better.
  • Brand Popularity: Popular deal advertisers get priority.

The exact formula is a family secret, but deal scores are a big part of how we return deals. We use it as a multiplier against other factors like distance and keyword relevance. For example, if you search for "cupcakes in chicago," the deal score prioritizes results for all cupcake deals near Chicago.

Since there's almost always more deals that space to show them, the score decides which deal is best (aka most likely to be purchased). Order by deal score or tweak your own system based on performance!

As always we welcome your feedback!

Tue, 22 Nov 2011 08:25:28 -0800 997,988 New Image Sizes http://blog.sqoot.com/997988-new-image-sizes http://blog.sqoot.com/997988-new-image-sizes

Today we're launching two amazing new features of the Sqoot deal platform.

It begins with dynamic image resizing. Now, you can easily work with deal images of any size. Want a 48x48 icon? We're on it. How about 180x150 banner? No problem. Just tell us the height and width and we'll resize images all the way up to 999x999. Heck, if you ask nicely, we'll even crop it for you. See for yourself:

http://images.sqoot.com/614869/48x48C

48x48c

http://images.sqoot.com/614869/180x150C

180x150c

And it gets better...

Because we're serving the images dynamically, we're now also able to report on impressions - in real time. This means instead of pageviews, we're able to tell you exactly how many deals you've shown across any platform: social, email, mobile, and web.

And best of all, you don't have to do a thing. Old image URLs still work, the API (and widgets) are using the new image system and from today on your dashboard will also report on impressions. To find out more, check out the documentation.

Happy Thanksgiving and (as always) we'd love your feedback,

Mo & Avand

Tue, 15 Nov 2011 09:24:19 -0800 Retire Early: GPS Daily Deals Sees 600% ROI http://blog.sqoot.com/gps-daily-deals-dealing-out-success-case-stud http://blog.sqoot.com/gps-daily-deals-dealing-out-success-case-stud

Sqoot--gps

Starting a consumer deal aggregator is no walk in the park. When GPS Daily Deals, the up and coming deal app that offers the best local deals on everyday services, entered the Apple & Android marketplaces, it faced a ton of competition. DealMap (now Google) & Citysearch were just a few of the big-names, not to mention the 150 smaller players chomping at the bit. *&^%!

What’s a newbie app to do when faced with an onslaught of competitors? Focus on their core offering & eliminate other distractions.

"Sqoot does the heavy lifting"

Tony Meador, GPS’ CEO, says it best, “I learned from experience to focus on what you can do that’s unique, not recreate the wheel. Sqoot does the heavy lifting. We’ve done the heavy lifting in the past and found that companies that try to do everything out of the gate are better off focusing on a niche -- cut away other items that cost time & money.”

"Killer support made Sqoot a no-brainer...

you respond in hours not days"

With 15 years of experience developing coupon technology and co-branded apps for mobile carriers like Verizon, Sprint & AT&T, Meador knows a thing or two about product development. GPS chose Sqoot’s daily deal API which aggregates 40,000 deals (queryable by just about anything) from nearly 100 providers. Features like 100% publisher revenue share, consolidated, real-time reporting, merchant ID matching, & killer support made Sqoot a no-brainer.

"There's a real advantage in working

with Sqoot as we grow"

“Our affiliate revenue has accelerated in the last week.” When we need support, “you respond in hours, not day. We’re impressed,” said Meador.

As GPS gained traction both online and in the Apple & Android marketplaces, they offset Sqoot’s monthly fee in a matter of days. In thinking about the future, Meador commented, “There’s a real advantage in working with Sqoot as we grow.”

We couldn’t agree more! Join in GPS' success and get started or contact Mo today!

Fri, 28 Oct 2011 09:02:46 -0700 Search Deals by Time http://blog.sqoot.com/search-deals-by-time http://blog.sqoot.com/search-deals-by-time

Halloween_art_2005_074

We just released a simple feature that let's you search for deals by time:

  • Created before or after
  • Updated before or after
  • Expires before or after

Just pass in a string to one of these new parameters and it will be parsed into a time or use one of our helpers. For example, you could ask for deals that expire before tomorrow, deals that were created after yesterday or deals updated after Oct 27th.

Our docs have all the juicy details and we welcome any feedback.

Happy Halloween and happy Friday!

p.s. Right now Sqoot assumes times are CST (not ideal, we know). Soon we'll update this so everything will speak UTC with some nice local time helpers.

Under-the-hood
There's a simple reason we haven't posted in a while: we've been hard at work building a radical new feature that will blow your mind. It's probably the simplest and most powerful feature we've built to date (and we've built a ton of cool stuff). Here's a sneak peak:

  • Securely hand off your customers' emails to us (big or small)
  • We'll send a beautiful, customized daily deal email on your behalf
  • You earn money when deals are sold

We've pulled out all the stops on this one. We've even partnered with a personalization engine to make sure the emails we're sending are über-relevant to your customers. Yeah we just rocked an umlat.

Look for an official announcement in the coming weeks. If you'd like beta access, please email us.

We're all about making it easier for you to personalize deals to your audience. So today we're launching three new shortcuts to make it easier:

  • Daily Deals: Limit results to just providers that run true daily deals (short expiration, big discount - you know, the kind merchants just love)
  • Women: Women buy more deals than men. If you have a female-centric audience this shortcut will definitely increase your conversion. It focuses on deals like women's clothing, baby and bridal.
  • Men: Men just don't buy manicure and spa deals. This shortcut will help you target them better.

For information on how to use our daily deal API and specifically shortcuts, check out or deal API docs.
